Relativity thought

Dear Marcel, The point about relativity I was trying to make to you last night (which I couldn't recall verbatim and you couldn't hear anyway) was that it was the Michelson-Morley experiment of 1887 which was the starting point of Einstein's theory of relativity in 1905. "The 1887 experiment was an attempt to measure the velocity of the earth through a 'fixed' frame of reference, the aether, by the effect which (they anticipated) it would have on the velocity of light. The failure of the experimenters to detect any such effect got Einstein thinking about relativity" (editor's note in Sartre's Between Existentialism and Marxism). Have a great weekend ! // abn
